Some notes …
How to download and install Winamp.
Winamp is a ‘media player’ — one of many you can download and install on your computer. It is very good for playing Shoutcast streams.
- Visit the Winamp download page - winamp.com/player.
- Under ‘Winamp Standard’, click on the button ‘Free Download’.
- What you actually see next depends on which browser you are using, but it is very likely you will see a small box asking you if you would like to save an application file. Save the file - and be sure to know where it will be saved. For most browsers, the default destination of downloaded files is the desktop (this is a browser setting under your control). The download should be quite fast.
- Find the downloaded file (winamp556_full_emusic-7plus_en-us.exe) on your computer. Click on the file (best to click on its icon rather than its name) to get the installation started. If you are asked if you want to run the file, click on ‘Run’.
- You should see the first of a series of dialog boxes — the first one is headed ‘Welcome to the Winamp Installer’. Click on ‘Next’.
- Now you should see the License Agreement. Click on ‘I Agree’ (if you do).
- Next is ‘Choose Install Location’. Accept the optimal location - click on ‘Next’.
- Next is ‘Choose Components’. If you have a fairly new computer, accept ‘Full’ (it gives you the best result). If your computer is not recent, or if your broadband connection is slow, choose ‘Standard’ or ‘Lite’. Click on ‘Next’.
- Next is ‘Choose Start Options’. No reason not to accept all three options. Click on ‘Next’.
- Next is ‘Get the Most out of Winamp’. Unselect all four options (ie: remove the ticks) - you do not need them. Take care that the option ‘Set Winamp Search as my default search engine’ is not ticked. Click on ‘Install’.
- The installation begins. It should finish quite quickly. Click on ‘Finish’.
Running Winamp.
- When you run Winamp for the first time, you will be prompted to ’setup’.
- First choose a ’skin’. This is not an important decision. Choose any skin you like the look of. Click on ‘Next’.
- Next is ‘File Associations’. Accept the defaults by clicking on ‘Next’.
- Next is ‘User Feedback’. You can ignore this. Un-select ‘Yes, allow anonymous usage statistics’. Click on ‘Finish’.
- To find an Internet radio station by content, select ‘Shoutcast Radio’ from the ‘Online Services’ list, then enter a keyword in the Search box, click on the Search button, look at the result list, open a station by clicking on its ‘Tune In’ button.
