Notes.
New opening times.
The Lawns centre will not be open in the late afternoon, and will be closed all day Thursday. We will be open on Saturdays when the StartIT courses are running.
City & Guilds StartIT World Wide Web and Email.
The City & Guilds ‘StartIT’ certificate is a basic qualification for beginners — designed and taught specifically for older people with little or no previous experience of computers or the Internet. It is one of the most successful and popular activities we have offered at Hackney Silver Surfers. We alternate two courses — ‘World Wide Web & Email’ and ‘Introduction to Word-processing with MS Word’. The certificate is funded by the Hackney Learning Trust, and formal enrolment is required before the course begins.
Drop-in is possible in the front area (there is usually at least one volunteer to help you).

MyGuide for new learners.
These Monday and Wednesday sessions are a guided journey through the Internet for people with little or no previous knowledge.
Drop-in is possible in the front area.
» There is more information on our MyGuide page.
Agewell Computer Club.
The Agewell Computer Club (ACC) is a project of Agewell in Hackney, who are funded to provide services to Hackney residents in the ‘mid-life’ (50-65) age range. We meet at The Lawns every Tuesday morning. We focus on finding ways to use the Internet to enhance our real-world lives — social activities in the community. Absolute beginners can fit in as easily as the more experienced computer users. People who attend must be Hackney residents aged 50 to 65. Our funders require us to be strict about that.
» There is more information on our Agewell Computer Club website.
Drop-in.
You can use the drop-in area at the front of The Lawns whenever we are open — but please note that
- If the centre is open on Thursdays, it will not be for Hackney Silver Surfers, so there can be no drop-in.
- Saturday drop-in will be possible only on the days when a StartIT course is running (there will be occasional gaps).
- Tuesday drop-in is for Hackney residents in the 50-65 age range.
