Structured courses and activities.

City & Guilds StartIT.

The City & Guilds ‘StartIT’ certificate is a basic qualification for beginners — designed and taught specifically for older people with little or no previous experience of computers or the Internet. It is one of the most successful and popular activities we have offered at Hackney Silver Surfers, with an unusually high success rate. We alternate two courses —

MyGuide.

MyGuide is a guided journey through the Internet for beginners, exploring and explaining all the online services and opportunities available to you. » There is more information on our MyGuide page.

Tasters/new learner support.

This is our campaign to introduce the Internet to as many new learners as possible. At the taster sessions, you will learn what the Internet is and how it could be useful to you — then we will give you some practical, hands-on experience — and get you started on the World Wide Web and email, the most useful Internet activity. » There is more information on our Tasters page .

Agewell Computer Club.

The Agewell Computer Club (ACC) is a project of Agewell in Hackney, who are funded to provide services to Hackney residents in the ‘mid-life’ (50-65) age range. Our sessions take place at The Lawns every Monday afternoon, 2.30 - 5 pm. We focus on finding ways to use the Internet to enhance our real-world lives — social activities in the community. Absolute beginners can fit in as easily as the more experienced computer users. » There is more information on our Agewell Computer Club page.

Workshops.

Workshops are regular events focussing on one topic. Most workshops happen on Friday afternoon. They are always announced in advance in the Workshops category of this web site, and in our email noticeboard. » There is more information in our Workshops category .

Drop-in.

‘Drop-in’ is how most Hackney Silver Surfers use our centre most of the time — just drop in whenever you feel like it. It’s a good way to learn, and the best way to practice what you have already learnt. There are usually other people around to help you when you get stuck. Even when there is a course on in the main area, the front section is reserved for drop-in — Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4.30 pm.
