A message from Kim Lask, Impossible Pictures

Did you live through the Blitz? Would you like to share your experiences with the rest of the nation?

Channel 4 are looking for men and women from in and around London to talk about their experiences of the Blitz for a series about The Second World War. The series is set to be an exciting and interesting look at this time, however each programme really needs a human voice, first hand accounts from people who lived during the Blitz.

If you are interested in sharing your experiences with us, initially over the phone, please contact Kim Lask at Impossible Pictures

Antony Gormley’s hugely successful Fourth Plinth project in Trafalgar Square — One and Other — would be a great opportunity to assert publicly that the finest creative minds in Hackney (and elsewhere) are those that have matured slowly over several decades.

Places on the plinth are very limited — the selection is random, but only 1 in 12 applicants succeed. So far 3 Hackney Silver Surfers have applied. We need at least 9 more! It’s your turn now.

Goldman Sachs have organised a free day out for Hackney Silver Surfers at Kew Gardens on Tuesday 7 July.

A coach will pick us up from The Lawns at 9.30 am (approximately).

Vouchers for lunch will be provided.

We expect to return at about 5.30 pm.

There are only 19 places available, so if you would like to join the group, this is what you should do …

  • Tell us (Sadia, Farzaneh, Michael or Rick) ASAP, eg: now! The final date for applications is the Friday before the trip — 3 July. Don’t leave it too late.
  • You can also phone us on 020 7254 2183 .

If more than 19 people apply (which is inevitable), we will draw names from a hat on Friday 3 July.

Gumtree.

Gumtree is a huge classified ads site, based in London and mostly free. Ad categories include ‘Flats & Houses’, ‘Services’, ‘Jobs’, ‘Stuff for Sale’. It’s not the only online classified ads site serving London — but it’s one we know about, and it seems to be popular.

A message from Jo Seagar, Olympic Youth Project …

Aspiring filmmakers are calling on Londoners with memories of the 1948 Olympics to come forward and take part in a series of short documentaries.

We are looking for people who remember the excitement of the 1948 London games; people who remember the atmosphere, the state of London and of course all the different sporting achievements and are willing to share their stories. We would be especially interested in speaking to anyone who was actively involved in the 1948 Olympic Games.

To find out more, or to get yourself or anyone you might know involved, contact East End Film Festival Director, Alison Poltock

  • Email: alison.poltock@towerhamlets.gov.uk .
  • Phone: 020 7364 7903 .

Further Information

The VAULT project, supported by the London Development Authority, Tower Hamlets 2012 Unit and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, aims to join together different sections of the community including young people, the elderly and athletes of all ages.

The project will see young people from the 5 Olympic boroughs being trained in digital filmmaking and will produce a series of documentaries in autumn 2009. They will interview athletes, spectators and workers from the 1948 London Olympics. These interviews will be interwoven with archived material from the Games which was the first to be televised on terrestrial TV.

A message from Lorna Richardson, Thames Discovery Programme

I work for the Thames Discovery Programme, based in Shoreditch.

Our programme would be a great opportunity for any of your members to get involved with an interesting archaeology project, and use their newly-developed IT skills as well.

Over the next three years, the archaeologists from the programme will survey 20 archaeological sites along the tidal Thames. This will be supported by the work of the Foreshore Recording and Observation Groups (FROG), who will monitor the surveyed sites for changes, as the daily tides scour away the remaining archaeological features. The FROG will be made up of volunteer members of the public, who will be trained in foreshore recording techniques, health and safety and digital recording by the TDP team. We are running a regular programme of free training events for anyone interested in joining the Thames Discovery Programme as a FROG member, interested in getting involved in background research, joining in with our public events or just to find out more about the Thames Discovery Programme. More detailed information can be found on the Thames Discovery website .

We run the FROG training events on a three-monthly cycle, with an Introductory evening, followed by a classroom-based Day 1 training event about a month later and a foreshore based Day 2 training event a month after the Day 1 training. A central part of our project is digital outreach, and we want as many people as possible contributing to the website. People can write for it and add their own photos or film of the Thames foreshore.

Our next introductory evening will be held at LAARC, Mortimer Wheeler House, Eagle Wharf Road, N1 7ED on the 1st May from 6 to 7.30 pm. All are welcome, and no previous archaeological knowledge is expected. All of our events are free.

Work out how to get from one place to another by public transport. You state where you are going to start from, where you want to go to, when you will travel, and how you want to do it. The journey planner tells you the most likely quickest route by bus, train, tram or river — with a few alternatives, and maps for starting and end points. It works surprisingly well.
